Teaching Outside the Classroom: Place-Based Learning

Teaching Outside the Classroom: Place-Based Learning In-Person

Join Ashley J. Holmes, author of Learning on Location (2023) and Brennan Collins from Georgia State's Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Online Education for an immersive day of development! Walk away with concrete plans for taking students outside and a head start on your CSU Experiential Learning Field Trip Grant application.

Place-based learning leverages critical engagement with local places to deepen teaching and learning in higher education. Location-based learning calls us to see the locations in which our campuses reside as resources within engaged learning practices. This approach complements other engaged teaching and high-impact practices (HIPs).

In this interactive and experiential workshop, we will spend some time walking and exploring locations near campus as a way of modeling and brainstorming pedagogical approaches. We will also provide theoretical explanation, concrete examples, and guided curricular planning for instructors interested in creating place-based learning assignments and experiences for their students.

Lunch will be provided for all attendees.
